Over-the-counter medicine for hives

Hives are itchy, raised welts that can appear suddenly and change position as individual welts fade and new ones form. The reaction involves release of histamine in the skin. A medicine that blocks histamine can reduce itching and the number of welts, although it does not explain the trigger or treat every cause.

Check the active ingredient and follow the package directions. Some products can cause drowsiness or interact with other medicines. Avoid taking more than the label allows, and ask a pharmacist about suitability during pregnancy, for a child, or with long-term health conditions.

Use a cool compress, wear loose clothing, and avoid heat, rubbing, and any recently introduced product that seems to worsen the welts. Keep a brief record of foods, medicines, infections, exercise, and exposures around the time the hives started.

For recurring symptoms, a clinician may recommend a planned antihistamine approach. Severe episodes sometimes need prescription treatment such as oral corticosteroid treatment, while facial or deeper swelling may be angioedema rather than simple surface hives.

Call emergency services immediately for difficulty breathing, wheezing, throat tightness, faintness, or rapidly increasing swelling of the tongue, lips, or face. These symptoms can signal a serious allergic reaction.

Arrange medical review if hives keep returning, last beyond a short episode, come with fever or feeling very unwell, or follow a new prescription medicine. Seek prompt advice for painful rather than itchy marks, bruising, or swelling that stays in one place.
