Over-the-counter genital wart removal: what to know

Genital bumps can have several causes, and a wart-like appearance does not confirm genital warts. Products made for common hand or foot warts may irritate delicate genital tissue, cause an open sore, or obscure the appearance a clinician needs to examine. Genital warts are linked with human papillomavirus, but other lesions can look similar.

Do not apply salicylic-acid wart remover, burn-off liquid, or a freezing kit to the genitals. Arrange an examination with a dermatologist, sexual-health clinician, or GP. If warts are confirmed, treatment may involve a prescribed cream or a procedure such as freezing or removal, selected for the site and extent. Avoid picking, shaving over, or sharing towels, and use barrier protection while discussing transmission with your clinician.

Seek prompt medical assessment for bleeding, ulceration, marked pain, rapid change, pus, fever, or difficulty passing urine. Pregnancy, a weakened immune system, or a new genital lesion also warrants professional advice before using any medicine.

Ask what the lesion could be, whether testing is needed, which treatment fits its location, how to reduce irritation, and whether sexual partners need assessment.
