Over-the-counter antibiotics for a UTI

A clinician may need to distinguish a bladder infection from irritation, a sexually transmitted infection, kidney involvement, or another cause. The choice of antibiotic depends on the suspected site of infection, your medical history, allergies, pregnancy status, and local prescribing guidance.

Burning when passing urine, needing to urinate often, or discomfort low in the abdomen can occur with a UTI, but these symptoms do not identify the cause on their own. A urine sample may help guide treatment, especially when symptoms are unusual, recurrent, or do not settle.

Using a leftover medicine, sharing someone else’s prescription, or stopping early can leave the infection untreated and expose you to side effects. Antibiotics also do not treat every cause of urinary symptoms.

Arrange a medical assessment through a GP, urgent-care service, or pharmacist-led pathway that can direct you to appropriate care. Have the names of current medicines and any allergy details ready. Drink fluids normally, avoid using someone else’s antibiotics, and follow the labelled directions for any pain medicine you can safely take.

If symptoms began after sexual contact, mention this privately because testing and treatment may be different. Do not delay assessment while trying several non-prescription products.

Seek urgent medical help for fever, chills, pain in the side or back, vomiting, marked weakness, confusion, or feeling suddenly very unwell. These features can indicate that infection has reached the kidneys or that another urgent problem needs attention.

Seek prompt advice if you are pregnant, have a weakened immune system, use a urinary catheter, or have a known urinary tract problem. If symptoms worsen or do not improve after prescribed treatment, contact the prescriber rather than taking extra doses.

Ask: Do I need a urine test? Which symptoms would suggest kidney involvement? Could another condition explain these symptoms? What should I do if I miss a dose or develop a side effect? If infections keep returning, ask whether an underlying trigger or prevention plan should be assessed.
