Ovary removal due to a cyst

An oophorectomy removes one ovary or, in some situations, both. For a cyst, the decision depends on its size and appearance, symptoms, whether it has twisted or ruptured, the condition of the surrounding ovary, and the possibility that it is cancerous. Many cysts can be monitored or removed while leaving ovarian tissue, but an ovary may need removal when the cyst has replaced or damaged much of it, bleeding cannot be controlled, or the surgical team needs to remove tissue safely. Removing one ovary does not automatically remove the other ovary or the uterus.

Ask whether cyst removal alone is feasible and what findings would change that plan during surgery. Discuss fertility goals, menstrual cycles, hormone symptoms, previous operations, medications, and whether one or both ovaries may be involved. The procedure may be performed through small keyhole incisions or a larger incision depending on the cyst and safety needs. A laparoscopic surgery system may support minimally invasive access in selected cases. Recovery advice includes wound care, activity limits, and symptoms that need review. Pathology usually examines removed tissue to clarify its nature.

Before surgery, seek urgent care for sudden severe pain, fainting, fever, repeated vomiting, abdominal swelling, or heavy bleeding. After surgery, urgent review is needed for worsening pain, heavy bleeding, fever, breathing difficulty, chest pain, a red or draining wound, or inability to keep fluids down. The care team can tell you which symptoms are expected during recovery and which require immediate contact.
