What should you know about ovarian cancer ultrasound?

A pelvic ultrasound uses sound waves to create images of the ovaries, uterus and nearby pelvic structures. It may be performed through the abdomen, through the vagina, or using both approaches. The sonographer may assess a growth's location, shape, internal contents and blood flow, along with fluid in the pelvis.

A scan can identify a finding that needs review, but benign cysts and other conditions can have overlapping appearances with cancer. The written report is interpreted alongside symptoms, examination and other tests. If ovarian cancer is diagnosed, further assessment may establish its extent and biological features.

Follow the appointment instructions about drinking water or emptying your bladder. Wear clothing that allows access to the lower abdomen, and tell the team if an internal scan may be uncomfortable or if you could be pregnant. Ask when the report will be discussed and who will explain any follow-up.

An unclear or concerning result may lead to repeat imaging, specialist review, blood tests or tissue testing. Treatment decisions are not made from the scan alone; options may include surgery, Chemotherapy or monitoring, depending on the overall diagnosis.

Do not wait for a routine scan if you develop sudden severe pelvic pain, fainting, heavy bleeding, persistent vomiting, fever with worsening pain, or difficulty breathing. Contact urgent services if you cannot pass urine or stool or if pain escalates quickly.
