Ovarian cancer and the stomach: what to know

The ovaries sit in the pelvis, but the abdominal cavity is connected around several organs. Ovarian cancer may cause pressure, early fullness, bloating, indigestion, nausea, constipation, or a change in how clothing fits. Cancer can also involve the abdominal lining or cause ascites, a build-up of fluid that increases abdominal size.

These symptoms are not specific to ovarian cancer. Digestive conditions, hormonal changes, medicines, and infections can cause similar problems. A pattern that is new, persistent, or getting worse deserves assessment rather than self-diagnosis.

Tell a clinician when symptoms began, whether meals change them, and whether bowel or urinary habits have changed. The assessment may include an examination, blood tests, and imaging such as pelvic ultrasound. If ovarian cancer is diagnosed, scans and tissue findings help show its extent. Treatment may involve chemotherapy, surgery, or both, depending on the findings and your health.

Arrange medical review for ongoing bloating, unexplained fullness after small meals, repeated vomiting, new constipation, or abdominal enlargement. Seek urgent help for severe pain, persistent vomiting, inability to pass stool or gas, fainting, black stools, or vomiting blood.
