Ovarian cancer spreading to the liver: what to know

Cancer cells may reach the liver through the abdominal tissues or bloodstream. The liver itself may contain deposits, or cancer may involve its surface and nearby abdominal lining. Imaging helps distinguish these patterns and shows whether other areas are involved. Possible effects include abdominal swelling, discomfort under the ribs, reduced appetite, nausea, or yellowing of the skin, although symptoms vary and can have other causes.

The care team may review scans, blood tests, tissue findings, and the cancer's molecular features. This information helps decide whether treatment should focus on shrinking cancer, controlling symptoms, or both.

Ask your gynaecologic oncology team to explain where the cancer is visible and whether the liver is involved directly or on its surface. A treatment plan may include chemotherapy, surgery to remove selected areas, or ovarian debulking surgery when the team believes reducing visible disease is suitable. Genomic tumour profiling can sometimes identify treatment options relevant to the tumour's biology. Palliative care can be added at any stage to relieve pain, nausea, appetite changes, or emotional strain.

Contact your oncology team promptly for worsening abdominal swelling, repeated vomiting, new confusion, increasing yellowing of the eyes or skin, dark urine, severe pain, or inability to keep fluids down. Seek emergency help for severe breathlessness, fainting, heavy bleeding, or sudden severe abdominal pain.
