Ovarian cancer spread to bone

When ovarian cancer reaches bone, it is distant spread rather than a new primary bone cancer. It can weaken bone or irritate nearby tissues, causing persistent bone pain, tenderness or reduced movement. Some people have no bone symptoms and learn about the finding during imaging.

The care team confirms what is happening by combining symptoms, examination and imaging. Depending on the situation, scans may show the location and strength of affected bone, while tissue or laboratory tests can help clarify the diagnosis and guide treatment. The spine, pelvis, ribs or other bones may be assessed.

Tell your oncology team about new or worsening bone pain, difficulty walking, a change in posture, or pain that interrupts sleep. Keep a record of where pain occurs, what movement affects it, and any weakness or numbness.

Management may combine treatment for the ovarian cancer with measures that protect bone and relieve symptoms. Options can include systemic therapy, focused radiation, surgery for selected structural problems, pain relief and supportive care. Genomic tumour profiling may help the team discuss treatment choices when appropriate.

Seek emergency help for sudden severe back or neck pain, new leg weakness, numbness, loss of bladder or bowel control, inability to walk, or a suspected fracture after minor strain. These signs can indicate pressure on the spinal cord or a weakened bone and need immediate assessment.
