Ovarian Cancer Rates

A rate is a way of describing how often a diagnosis or outcome is seen in a defined population and time period. Rates can vary with age, family history, inherited gene changes, access to assessment, and how cases are recorded. They are useful for planning services and understanding broad patterns, but they do not turn an individual symptom into a diagnosis.

Ovarian cancer can present with persistent bloating, pelvic or abdominal discomfort, early fullness, or changes in bowel or bladder habits. These symptoms also have many non-cancer causes. A clinician assesses their pattern, duration, examination findings, and test results together.

Arrange a medical assessment if symptoms are persistent, new for you, or interfering with daily activities. Bring a symptom record noting when changes began, how often they occur, and whether eating or movement affects them. A pelvic ultrasound may be part of an assessment; further tests are chosen according to the findings.

If ovarian cancer is diagnosed, the team may discuss tumour profiling, surgery, chemotherapy, or inherited-risk assessment such as BRCA genetic testing. These decisions depend on your results and priorities, not on a population rate alone.

Seek prompt medical advice for persistent abdominal swelling, unexplained weight change, pelvic pain, unusual bleeding, or continuing digestive or urinary changes. Seek urgent help for severe pain, repeated vomiting, fainting, heavy bleeding, or inability to pass urine or stool.
