Ovarian cancer spread to bone and life expectancy

Bone metastasis means ovarian cancer cells have travelled from the original tumour to bone. It can weaken affected areas and cause pain, but symptoms and scan findings vary. Your clinicians consider the extent and location of spread, whether other organs are involved, the cancer’s biology, previous treatments, general health, and how the disease responds. These factors make an individualized discussion more useful than a general life-expectancy figure. A scan may be followed by further imaging or tissue assessment when the result would change care.

Ask for a review with your oncology team and, when needed, a bone or pain specialist. Treatment may include systemic therapy, medicines that protect bone, radiation to a painful area, or surgery to stabilize a vulnerable bone. Gentle movement and safe activity should be planned around fracture risk. Seek urgent medical help for sudden severe back or neck pain, new leg weakness or numbness, difficulty walking, or loss of bladder or bowel control. These can signal pressure on the spinal cord. Sudden severe bone pain after a minor movement may indicate a fracture and needs prompt assessment. Tell your team about persistent pain, new weakness, constipation, or thirst because treatment can reduce complications.
