Ovarian cancer and lymph nodes: what to know

Lymph nodes are small immune-system structures that filter fluid. Ovarian cancer cells may reach nodes in the pelvis or abdomen. A scan can suggest enlarged or abnormal nodes, but imaging alone cannot always confirm cancer. During staging surgery, a surgeon may inspect or remove selected nodes so a pathologist can examine them. The result helps describe how far the disease has extended; it is one part of the overall picture alongside the tumour’s appearance, grade, and findings elsewhere in the abdomen.
