What should you know about ovarian cancer liver metastasis?

Metastasis means cancer cells have travelled from the original site to another part of the body. Ovarian cancer may involve the liver’s surface or deeper liver tissue; scans and, in selected situations, a tissue sample help clarify the location. This is different from a primary liver cancer, which begins in liver cells.

The finding may be associated with abdominal swelling, discomfort, reduced appetite, nausea, or changes in liver function, but some people have no liver-specific symptoms. Symptoms alone cannot establish where cancer has spread. The oncology team combines imaging, pathology, blood tests, and your overall health when discussing treatment.

Ask which scan or biopsy confirms the finding, whether disease is on the liver surface or within it, and how this affects stage and treatment goals. Treatment may include chemotherapy, surgery to remove or reduce disease, targeted medicines, or symptom-focused care. Ovarian debulking surgery may be considered only when the team believes surgery is appropriate and safe for the individual situation.

Genomic tumour profiling can sometimes identify features relevant to medicine choices, while BRCA testing addresses inherited risk and family counselling. Bring medication and supplement lists, and ask how liver involvement could affect drug selection, nutrition, and follow-up.

Contact your oncology team promptly for increasing abdominal swelling, persistent vomiting, worsening abdominal pain, yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, unusual sleepiness, confusion, or inability to eat or drink. These symptoms can have several causes but may need same-day assessment.

Seek emergency help for severe pain, fainting, chest pain, severe breathlessness, sudden confusion, or rapidly worsening weakness. Do not wait for the next scan when a symptom is severe or changing quickly.
