Ovarian cancer genes: what genetic information can tell you

An inherited genetic test uses a blood or saliva sample to look for a change present from birth. A result may help explain risk for you and may have implications for blood relatives. It does not say that cancer is present, and a negative result does not remove every possible risk.

Tumour profiling examines genetic features in cancer cells. It can help the oncology team understand the tumour and consider treatments that match its biology. Tumour findings are not automatically inherited by relatives. A genetics professional can explain the distinction and the limits of each result.

Write down which test was offered, who recommended it, and whether the sample is from you or from tumour tissue. Before inherited testing, ask about possible results, privacy, family implications, and whether counselling is available. Gather a three-generation family history of ovarian, breast, bowel, prostate, or pancreatic cancer if known.

If ovarian cancer has been diagnosed, ask whether tumour profiling could affect treatment choices. If a hereditary risk is identified, discuss tailored surveillance and risk-reduction options. Oophorectomy is a major operation and is considered individually; it is not an automatic response to every genetic result.

Arrange a genetics or oncology review when a close relative has a relevant cancer pattern, when a test report needs interpretation, or when you have symptoms such as persistent bloating, pelvic pain, early fullness, or unusual bleeding. Seek urgent care for severe pain, fainting, heavy bleeding with weakness, or breathing difficulty.
