Ovarian cancer and dizzy spells: what to know

Dizziness can mean light-headedness, unsteadiness, or a spinning sensation, and each pattern suggests different questions. In someone with ovarian cancer, it may relate to poor food or fluid intake, vomiting, blood loss, anaemia, infection, low blood pressure, treatment effects, or medicines. It may also come from an inner-ear problem, migraine, or a heart or neurological condition. Ovarian cancer itself is not established by dizziness; the timing and associated symptoms matter.

Sit or lie down, avoid driving and climbing, and tell someone nearby if you feel unsafe. Record when the spell began, how long it lasted, what you were doing, and whether there was faintness, spinning, palpitations, vomiting, headache, weakness, or vision change. Contact your clinician, particularly during cancer treatment, because a medication review, examination, blood tests, or fluid assessment may be needed. Do not stop prescribed medicines without advice.

Call emergency services for fainting, chest pain, severe shortness of breath, sudden weakness or numbness, trouble speaking, a new severe headache, confusion, or a seizure. Seek same-day medical advice for repeated dizziness, inability to keep fluids down, black or bloody stools, heavy bleeding, fever, or dizziness after a fall. Urgency depends on the warning sign and severity, not on the assumption that dizziness is cancer.

Ask whether your medicines, hydration, blood count, blood pressure, heart rhythm, or balance could explain the episodes. Ask which symptoms require emergency help, whether you should change activity temporarily, and how to manage dizziness safely during ovarian cancer treatment.
