Ovarian cancer brain metastases: what to know

A brain metastasis is a tumour deposit that began elsewhere and reached brain tissue. It can affect movement, speech, vision, balance, memory, or alertness, although symptoms vary with its location and size. Headache, seizures, nausea, or new weakness may occur. A symptom alone does not establish a metastasis; clinicians use neurological examination and brain imaging to clarify the cause. The wider cancer picture, previous treatment, and general health shape the care plan.

Tell the oncology team promptly about new neurological symptoms, even if they come and go. Assessment may include brain imaging and review of scans from other parts of the body. Specialists may discuss treatments aimed at the brain lesion, the ovarian cancer, symptom control, or a combination. Options can include focused radiation, surgery in selected situations, medicines to reduce swelling or seizures, and systemic treatment. Call emergency services for a first seizure, a seizure lasting longer than expected, sudden one-sided weakness, new trouble speaking, severe confusion, loss of consciousness, or a sudden severe headache.
