What should you know about ovarian cancer and tamoxifen?

Tamoxifen blocks oestrogen effects in certain breast cancers. Ovarian cancers are not all driven by the same signals, so a medicine used for breast cancer should not be assumed to treat an ovarian tumour. A past or current tamoxifen prescription also does not diagnose ovarian cancer.

Tell your clinician about tamoxifen if you have pelvic symptoms, abnormal bleeding or an ovarian finding. They may review your breast cancer history, menstrual status, other medicines and imaging. A pelvic ultrasound can help examine the ovaries, but the result must be interpreted with the rest of the assessment.

Keep taking tamoxifen exactly as prescribed unless the prescriber tells you otherwise. Report new vaginal bleeding, pelvic pain, unusual discharge or visual changes. Bring the medicine name, dose and start date to appointments, along with details of any breast or ovarian diagnosis.

If a mass is found, ask whether it needs observation, additional imaging, surgery or tissue testing. If ovarian cancer is confirmed, genomic tumour profiling may help identify features relevant to treatment, but it is not a substitute for diagnosis.

Arrange prompt medical review for bleeding after menopause, bleeding between periods, persistent pelvic pressure, increasing abdominal swelling or pain that does not settle. Seek urgent help for severe sudden pain, fainting, heavy bleeding, repeated vomiting or breathlessness.

Ask why tamoxifen was prescribed, whether it should continue during an ovarian assessment, which symptoms require urgent contact, and how your breast cancer history changes the tests or treatment being considered.
