What should you know about ovarian cancer and kidney failure?

A pelvic mass can press on the urinary tubes and obstruct the flow of urine, while kidney failure can alter fluid balance and the way medicines leave the body. These are separate clinical questions: kidney impairment does not prove that ovarian cancer is present, and ovarian symptoms do not explain every change in kidney function.

Assessment may include kidney blood tests, urine review and imaging such as a pelvic ultrasound. The team may adjust contrast use, medicine doses, fluids and the timing of procedures according to kidney function and dialysis arrangements.

Tell every clinician about dialysis, a kidney transplant, urine output changes, allergies and all prescribed or non-prescribed medicines. Do not stop cancer or kidney medicines without advice. Ask the teams to share a single plan before surgery, chemotherapy or a scan that may affect fluid or kidney balance.

If ovarian cancer is confirmed, treatment selection depends on the cancer findings, kidney function, other illnesses and your goals. Options may include surgery, adjusted systemic treatment and symptom-focused support. Palliative care can be involved alongside cancer treatment to help with pain, nausea, fatigue and planning.

Seek urgent medical help for very little or no urine, severe breathlessness, chest pain, confusion, fainting, new severe flank or abdominal pain, repeated vomiting or rapidly worsening swelling. Contact your kidney team promptly if dialysis access is not working or a scheduled session cannot be completed.

Ask whether the ovaries or urinary tubes appear affected, which tests are safe with your kidney function, how dialysis timing will be managed, whether doses need adjustment, and who to call if urine output or swelling changes.
