A bright, suitable light helps an examiner see the outer ear canal and eardrum through the viewing head. The SmartLED 5500 label identifies a particular product specification, but the light cannot reveal what lies beyond the visible surface or measure hearing. Wax, swelling, discharge, a narrow canal and movement can still limit the view. Clinicians interpret colour, shape and movement together with pain, fever, discharge, hearing changes and the rest of the examination. A product name should therefore be understood as equipment information rather than a health result.

Tell the clinician if the ear is painful, has been operated on, or has a suspected object inside. Do not force an otoscope into the canal or use it to remove wax.
