Piccolight otoscope: what to know

A Piccolight-style instrument is designed to be light, portable and easy to hold during routine examinations. Its lamp and viewing lens help the clinician look for visible changes in the ear canal, wax, irritation or the eardrum area. The available view depends on the person’s anatomy, cooperation and the amount of obstruction. The instrument is an examination aid rather than a treatment, and the findings need to be considered alongside pain, fever, hearing symptoms and the rest of the assessment.

Tell the clinician about ear surgery, tubes, previous perforation, pain or discharge before the examination starts. Keep your head still and say immediately if the tip hurts. A clinician should choose the correct clean speculum and use gentle positioning. Never insert a Piccolight or similar device to scratch the canal, loosen wax or remove an object. Reusable parts should be cleaned as directed, while single-use parts should not be reused.

Seek prompt assessment for severe ear pain, blood or discharge from the ear, sudden hearing change, intense dizziness or a foreign body. An eye injury, severe eye pain or sudden change in vision needs urgent medical attention; an otoscope cannot provide a complete eye assessment. Children who cannot tolerate an ear examination may need a child-focused consultation.
