Otoscope pen: what patients and learners should know

Its narrow handle and small head make it convenient for clinicians, students and home-care kits, while a built-in light helps reveal the canal. A disposable or reusable speculum fits at the tip and should match the person and examination. The instrument may also be used to inspect the entrance of the nose or throat with suitable technique. A bright view alone cannot identify every cause of pain, blockage or hearing change, and a normal-looking view does not rule out problems beyond the area seen.

If a clinician uses an otoscope pen, stay still and mention tenderness before the tip enters the ear. Never push it deeply, twist it forcefully or share an unclean speculum. Do not use a pen-style otoscope to dig out wax, insects or objects. Keep the light lens clean, check the battery and follow the maker’s cleaning instructions. People with ear tubes, previous ear surgery or a possible eardrum injury should have the examination performed by a trained professional.

Seek prompt care for severe ear pain, bleeding, pus-like discharge, a sudden hearing change, severe dizziness or a foreign object in the ear. Sudden vision loss, eye injury or severe eye pain needs urgent medical attention even though an otoscope is not the right tool for a complete eye examination.
