Wall-mounted otoscope ophthalmoscope units: what to know

The wall station connects handles to a fixed power supply, so clinicians can pick up an otoscope or ophthalmoscope without searching for loose equipment. The otoscope illuminates the ear canal and eardrum area; the ophthalmoscope helps inspect the pupil and visible structures inside the eye. A fixed location can support orderly cleaning, charging and storage. It does not make an examination automatic: the clinician still needs the right attachment, technique and patient history.

The clinician will explain the examination and may ask you to sit still while the lighted head is brought close to the ear or eye. Tell them if you have pain, dizziness, light sensitivity, a recent injury or difficulty staying still. The examination should be gentle, with a clean speculum or other suitable attachment. Avoid touching the wall unit or its tip; staff will manage setup and disinfection. If a child is being examined, a parent or carer can help with reassurance and positioning.

Ask for prompt medical assessment after sudden vision change, severe eye pain, an eye injury, marked swelling, or a chemical exposure. Ear pain with bleeding, significant discharge, sudden hearing change, or a suspected foreign body also needs clinical review. Do not use an examination instrument yourself to scratch, remove wax or retrieve an object.
