What should you know about an otoscope head?

The head attaches to the handle and directs light through a small viewing tip. The lens enlarges the area being examined, helping the clinician look for wax, irritation, swelling, fluid, or changes to the eardrum. Different tips may be selected for different ear canals, particularly when examining a child. The head is part of the complete Otoscope, rather than a separate treatment.

Tell the clinician about pain, discharge, hearing changes, or an earlier ear injury. Relax your jaw and keep your head still when asked. Never push the viewing tip into the canal yourself, and do not use cotton buds beforehand because they can move wax deeper or irritate the skin.
