What should you know about otoscope halogen lamp?

Halogen light is directed through the otoscope’s optical system so the examiner can view the canal and eardrum. The light source does not remove wax, detect every disease or replace a careful history. Image quality can be affected by a dirty lens, a damaged tip, poor positioning or an obstructed canal. The lamp and instrument may become warm during use, so the device should be handled according to its instructions.

Check that the light works and the viewing tip is clean and suitable before the examination. Explain each step, stabilise the patient’s head and avoid force when entering the canal. Do not stare into the light or touch the warm lamp housing immediately after use. Replace a failing lamp or battery through the approved process rather than improvising a repair. A bright light does not make home diagnosis appropriate. Arrange medical assessment for persistent ear pain, discharge, bleeding, sudden hearing change or significant dizziness. Seek urgent help for sudden hearing loss, severe vertigo, facial weakness or a rapidly worsening condition. If the canal is blocked or the patient cannot tolerate the examination, stop and use a clinician-led plan.

Ask whether the lamp is functioning correctly, how to clean the optical parts, which tips are compatible and how to recognise heat or lighting problems. If you have symptoms, ask what the examination showed and whether another assessment is needed.
