What should you know about an otoscope and the ear?

The outer ear leads into a narrow canal ending at the eardrum. An otoscope shines light along this passage and magnifies the view. A clinician may see earwax, dry or swollen skin, discharge, a trapped object, or a eardrum that appears dull, inflamed, pulled inward or perforated. Ear pain does not always come from a visible ear finding, and a clear canal does not rule out every cause of reduced hearing or discomfort. The clinician therefore uses the view with your symptoms, medical history and examination of nearby areas.

Note whether the problem affects one or both ears and whether it started after swimming, a cold, air travel, an injury or inserting an object. Do not probe the canal or pour household liquids into it. During the examination, keep your head steady and report pain, tenderness or dizziness. If wax blocks the view, the clinician can discuss a suitable approach instead of forcing an instrument deeper. Persistent hearing change may need a GP consultation or a separate hearing assessment.

Seek prompt care for sudden hearing loss, severe or rapidly increasing pain, blood or pus, an object that cannot be removed easily, or pronounced dizziness. Ear symptoms with swelling behind the ear, facial weakness, severe headache or confusion need urgent evaluation. A young child who is very unwell, unusually sleepy or difficult to console should be assessed promptly.

Ask whether the canal and eardrum were fully visible, what finding may explain your symptoms, whether hearing should be tested, and which changes require an earlier review. Ask what ear care is safe while the problem settles.
