What should you know about an otoscope diagnostic set?

The set commonly combines a handheld viewing instrument with a bright light, magnification, a viewing lens and disposable or reusable ear specula. The speculum is the small cone-shaped tip placed gently at the entrance of the ear canal. Different tip sizes help the clinician examine children and adults with less pressure. Looking through the otoscope can show wax, swelling, irritation, discharge, a foreign object or changes in the eardrum. The appearance is interpreted alongside symptoms and the rest of the examination; the instrument alone does not explain every ear problem.

Bring details about ear pain, blocked hearing, itching, discharge, fever, dizziness or a recent injury. Keep the ear still during the examination and say if the tip feels uncomfortable. Do not put cotton buds, hairpins or other objects into the canal before the appointment, because they can push wax deeper or irritate the skin. A clinician may examine both ears, compare the eardrums and decide whether further assessment or treatment is needed. A GP consultation can be useful when an ear concern is not settling.

Arrange prompt medical assessment for severe or worsening ear pain, sudden hearing loss, blood or fluid after an injury, marked dizziness, swelling behind the ear, or a child who is unusually drowsy or difficult to settle. Seek urgent help when ear symptoms occur with facial weakness, severe headache or confusion. These warning signs need clinical judgement rather than home inspection with an otoscope.

Ask what was seen in each ear, whether wax or inflammation is affecting the view, whether the eardrum looks intact, and which symptoms should trigger a review. For a child, ask how to keep the ear comfortable and whether a child health consultation is appropriate.
