What should you know about otoscope device?

The clinician places a clean speculum at the entrance of the ear and directs light inward. This can help reveal swelling, redness, discharge, wax, a bulging eardrum, or fluid behind it. The view is only one part of an assessment: symptoms, medical history, hearing, and sometimes additional tests also matter. The device cannot see through every blockage or identify every cause of ear pain and hearing change.

Keep still and tell the clinician about tenderness, recent injury, surgery, discharge, or a suspected perforation. Avoid putting cotton buds, hairpins, or unapproved drops into the ear before assessment. Do not use a household otoscope to probe deeply, particularly in a child. An Otoscope examination may be included in a GP Consultation or Child Health Consultation when ear symptoms are present.

Arrange care for ongoing earache, discharge, fever, blocked hearing, or symptoms after an injury. Seek urgent assessment for sudden hearing loss, severe dizziness, swelling behind the ear, a penetrating injury, or a person who seems seriously unwell. A device can support an examination, but it should not be used to postpone care when symptoms are severe.

Ask what was visible, whether wax or inflammation affected the view, whether hearing should be checked, and which changes require follow-up.
