What should you know about OTC skin tag removal?

A skin tag is a soft, flesh-coloured growth that often hangs from a narrow stalk, commonly around the neck, underarms, eyelids, or body folds. Other growths can look similar, including warts, moles, or lesions that need assessment. An acid, freezing, cutting, or tying product may cause pain, blistering, bleeding, infection, or a lasting change in skin colour when used on the wrong lesion or sensitive area.

The face, eyelids, genitals, and areas with friction need particular care. Diabetes, poor circulation, reduced sensation, immune suppression, or medicines that affect bleeding can also change the risk of home treatment.

Do not cut, burn, or pull a growth off at home, and do not apply a product near the eye or on broken, infected, or inflamed skin. Photograph the area and note changes in size, colour, surface, or bleeding. A clinician can examine the lesion and discuss options such as sterile snip removal, freezing, or another procedure when appropriate.
