What an osteosarcoma PET scan can show

A PET scan uses a small amount of a tracer to map tissues that are taking up more of it. Osteosarcoma and some non-cancerous processes can both show increased activity, so a bright area is not automatically cancer. PET images are often combined with CT images, which add detail about location and structure. The combined study may help the team look at the primary bone lesion and check other areas of the body.

The scan can also provide a reference for later assessment, but changes are judged alongside symptoms, examination, MRI, X-rays, and pathology. PET cannot replace a biopsy when tissue confirmation is needed.

Follow the imaging centre’s instructions about eating, drinking, medicines, and activity before the scan. Tell staff about diabetes, pregnancy, breastfeeding, allergies, recent illness, and difficulty lying still. During the appointment, the tracer is given and a quiet waiting period allows it to distribute before images are taken. Ask when and how the result will be explained. A PET scan is generally arranged as a planned test, so a result alone is not a reason to seek emergency care. Contact the clinical team promptly if bone pain or swelling is rapidly worsening while you wait. Seek urgent help for sudden severe limb pain, inability to bear weight, new breathlessness, chest pain, or coughing blood.
