What should you know about osteosarcoma left femur?

The femur is the thigh bone, and a lesion may occur near the hip, along the shaft or close to the knee. Pain, swelling, limping and reduced strength can develop gradually. Side of the body helps describe location, but it does not by itself indicate the cause of symptoms.

X-rays and magnetic resonance imaging show the bone and surrounding tissues. Additional staging scans may be used to look for disease elsewhere. A biopsy confirms the tissue type and must be planned with the surgical team, because an incorrectly placed sample can complicate later removal.

Arrange assessment for persistent thigh or hip pain, a swelling, or a limp without a clear explanation. Until reviewed, avoid activities that cause pain or put heavy impact through the leg. Tell the clinician about previous injuries, pain at night and any change in walking distance.

For confirmed osteosarcoma, treatment commonly includes chemotherapy and surgery. The operation may remove the affected section while preserving the limb when that is suitable, followed by reconstruction and rehabilitation. The plan depends on tumour position, blood-vessel and nerve relationships, scan findings and biopsy results.

Seek urgent care for sudden intense thigh pain, a new deformity, inability to bear weight, or a rapid increase in swelling. These symptoms may indicate a fracture through weakened bone or another problem needing immediate assessment.

Ask where the tumour sits in the femur, whether the biopsy plan has been coordinated with surgery, and how the femoral bone would be reconstructed. Discuss crutches, weight-bearing, rehabilitation, pain control and the expected impact on walking and work or school.
