What should you know about osteomyelitis foot treatment?

A foot bone infection can develop beneath an ulcer, after an injury or operation, or when infection spreads from nearby tissue. Diabetes, reduced sensation and poor blood flow can make a wound harder to notice and heal. Clinicians assess the wound, depth, circulation, sensation and ability to bear weight. They may use blood tests, imaging and a deep tissue or bone sample to guide treatment. A superficial swab may not represent the organism in bone.

Treatment may include prescribed antibiotics, dressing changes, removal of dead tissue, off-loading with a protective device, and treatment of circulation problems. Surgery can drain an abscess or remove infected bone while preserving as much healthy tissue as possible. Keep weight off the foot exactly as instructed, inspect it daily if sensation is reduced, and never alter antibiotics without advice. Bone Grafting can be considered for selected bone defects after infection control.

Seek urgent care for spreading redness, increasing warmth or swelling, pus, fever, shaking chills, a foul wound smell, black or grey skin, new numbness, or a foot that becomes cold or pale. Sudden inability to walk, severe pain or red streaking up the leg also warrants same-day assessment.

Ask how deep the infection is, whether bone sampling is needed, how much weight you may place on the foot, how dressings should be changed, and how blood flow and glucose control affect healing. Ask how progress will be checked and what finding would change the plan.
