What should you know about osteomyelitis causes and risk factors?

Short answer
Osteomyelitis starts when germs reach bone through the bloodstream, a nearby wound, an operation, or an injury, with some conditions making infection easier to establish.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How bone infection begins
A bloodstream infection can seed bone, especially when the body is already fighting another infection. Germs may also travel from an ulcer, abscess, dental problem, or infected joint into nearby bone. An open fracture, recent bone operation, or implanted hardware can provide a route from outside the body. Risk is also influenced by diabetes, poor circulation, reduced sensation, a weakened immune system, kidney disease, smoking, or a history of bone infection.
Reducing avoidable problems
Clean and cover breaks in the skin, seek care for wounds that do not improve, and follow instructions after an operation or fracture. People with reduced foot sensation should check their feet regularly and use footwear that limits pressure. Do not self-treat persistent drainage with leftover antibiotics. A clinician may use examination, blood tests, imaging, and a culture to separate osteomyelitis from other causes of bone pain or swelling.
When assessment is urgent
Get same-day medical advice for a deep wound, exposed bone, spreading redness, pus, worsening swelling, or fever. Seek emergency help for confusion, fainting, severe weakness, rapid breathing, or a limb that becomes cold or discoloured. Prompt attention matters particularly when circulation, sensation, or immune function is reduced.
Questions to bring
Ask how the infection could have reached the bone, which risk factors affect healing, whether circulation and sensation need testing, which sample or scan is useful, and how wound protection will fit your daily activities.

Questions people ask
Can a minor injury lead to osteomyelitis?
An injury can create an entry point or damage tissue, but the presence of an injury alone does not establish a bone infection.
Is osteomyelitis contagious?
The infection in a person’s bone is not usually spread by ordinary contact; the specific germ and any draining wound determine what precautions are needed.
