What should you know about osteoarthritis and osteomyelitis?

Short answer

Osteoarthritis is gradual joint wear and inflammation, whereas osteomyelitis is a bone infection that can cause severe illness and needs prompt treatment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Osteoarthritis
A chronic joint condition that often develops gradually
Osteomyelitis
An infection involving bone
Urgent warning
Fever or rapidly worsening redness, swelling, and pain

Why the distinction matters

Osteoarthritis commonly causes activity-related joint pain, stiffness, swelling, and reduced range of motion. Symptoms often develop gradually in a knee, hip, hand, or another joint. Morning joint stiffness may occur, especially after being still, but the pattern alone cannot confirm the cause.

Osteomyelitis affects bone and may follow an open injury, surgery, spread from nearby tissue, or another source of infection. It can cause deep pain, warmth, swelling, fever, chills, drainage, or feeling unwell. A painful joint does not by itself indicate osteomyelitis; infection needs a clinician’s assessment and testing.

Choosing the next step

For suspected osteoarthritis, pacing, suitable strengthening, mobility work, weight-management support, and prescribed pain relief may reduce strain and improve function. A physiotherapist can adapt activity around the affected joint. Anti-inflammatory medication or a cortisone injection may be considered by a clinician after checking risks and the diagnosis.

Suspected osteomyelitis should not be treated with home exercise or leftover antibiotics. Medical care may involve examination, blood tests, imaging, and a targeted treatment plan. Keep any wound clean and follow instructions about dressings and medicines.

When to seek care

Seek urgent medical care for fever with deep bone or joint pain, rapidly worsening swelling or redness, pus or drainage, severe pain after surgery or an open injury, or feeling faint or confused. For non-urgent joint pain, arrange review when symptoms persist, disturb sleep, or limit walking, work, or daily tasks.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which findings support osteoarthritis and which would raise concern for infection, and whether imaging or blood tests are needed. Discuss safe exercise, medication side effects, wound care, and the exact warning signs that should trigger urgent reassessment.

Questions people ask

Can osteoarthritis turn into osteomyelitis?

They are different conditions. Osteoarthritis does not automatically become a bone infection, although infection can occur separately and needs prompt assessment.

Does joint swelling always mean infection?

No. Swelling has several possible causes, including osteoarthritis; fever, warmth, rapid worsening, drainage, or feeling unwell make urgent assessment more important.
