What should you know about ORS and diarrhoea?

Diarrhoea removes fluid and electrolytes from the body. ORS contains a measured balance of water, glucose, and salts that the small intestine can absorb, even when stools remain loose. It treats fluid loss rather than the cause of diarrhoea. Gastroenteritis and Food Poisoning are common causes, while persistent or recurrent symptoms can have other explanations such as Food Intolerance, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Coeliac Disease, Crohn's Disease, Giardiasis, or Hyperthyroidism. Blood in the stool, severe pain, fever, or ongoing weight loss changes the need for assessment.

Mix a commercial sachet exactly as its instructions state, using safe water and the specified volume. Sip frequently; small amounts are often easier to keep down than a large drink. Prepare fresh solution as directed and do not add extra sugar, salt, juice, or milk. Continue suitable food when able, and breastfeed infants as usual. Avoid relying on fizzy drinks or very sweet juices, which can worsen loose stools. A pharmacist or clinician can advise on the product and amount for a child, older adult, or person with kidney or heart disease.

Seek urgent care for confusion, fainting, very little urine, severe weakness, inability to drink, repeated vomiting, blood or black stool, severe abdominal pain, or signs of dehydration such as a dry mouth with worsening dizziness. Infants, frail older adults, and people with significant medical conditions can deteriorate quickly. Arrange medical review when diarrhoea persists, repeatedly returns, follows recent travel, or is accompanied by fever or weight loss.
