What should you know about oriundo nail fungus?

A fungal nail may become yellow, white or brown, develop debris beneath it, thicken, split or lift from the nail bed. It can affect one or several nails and may occur with athlete's foot. Trauma, psoriasis and other conditions can produce similar changes, so a clinician may examine the nail and take a sample before recommending prolonged treatment.

Nail growth is gradual, which means visible improvement may take time even after the infection is controlled. The treatment plan depends on how many nails are involved, how deeply the nail is affected, your health and any medicines you take.

Keep nails trimmed and dry, change damp socks, avoid sharing nail tools and wear footwear that allows the feet to stay ventilated. Treat coexisting athlete's foot if present, because infection can move between skin and nails. Do not scrape or remove the nail aggressively at home.

A clinician may discuss topical antifungal treatment for selected infections, oral antifungal treatment when appropriate, laser treatment for nail fungus, or nail surgery in particular situations. Each option has different precautions; oral medicines may require a review of liver health and other medicines.

Arrange an assessment for a nail that changes progressively, causes pain, lifts, or develops surrounding redness. Seek prompt care for pus, spreading warmth, fever, severe swelling or difficulty walking. People with diabetes, reduced circulation or a weakened immune system should seek advice early for foot or nail changes.
