What should you know about original kinesio tape?

Short answer
Original kinesio tape is an elastic adhesive strip used to provide light sensory support while allowing planned movement.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the tape can do
Kinesiology tape stretches with the skin and may change how movement or touch is sensed around a painful or swollen area. It can be used as an addition to exercise, activity modification, or rehabilitation; it does not hold a joint as firmly as a brace or replace assessment of an injury. The direction, tension, and shape of the strips depend on the body region and treatment goal.
For an ankle sprain or pain around the kneecap, a therapist may use tape to support a movement programme. The effect varies between people, and tape should not be used to push through increasing pain.
Applying and wearing it
Apply tape to clean, dry skin without lotion, and avoid placing it over an open wound, active rash, or recently irritated skin. Rub the backing gently to activate the adhesive, then watch for itching, burning, blistering, or redness. Remove it slowly in the direction of hair growth; oil or warm water can help loosen stubborn adhesive. Your therapist can show the appropriate pattern and wearing time.
When to seek care
Remove the tape and seek advice if the skin becomes painful, blistered, markedly red, or swollen. Get medical assessment for severe pain, inability to bear weight, obvious deformity, or new numbness after an injury. Breathing difficulty or swelling of the face needs emergency help, especially if it follows adhesive exposure.
Questions for your doctor
Ask: What movement is the tape intended to support? How much tension should be used? How long should it stay on? What exercise should accompany it, and what skin reaction means I should stop?

Questions people ask
Can kinesio tape heal a sprain by itself?
No. It may support comfort or movement, but a sprain still needs an appropriate assessment and rehabilitation plan.
Can I apply it over a wound?
No. Avoid open wounds, active rashes, and irritated skin unless a clinician gives specific advice.
