What should you know about organic cradle cap treatment?

Cradle cap, also called infantile seborrheic dermatitis, often appears as greasy or flaky scale on the scalp. The skin underneath may look mildly red, but babies are not necessarily uncomfortable. Scale can cling to the hair, so pulling it away may break the skin and invite infection.

A scalp rash that is very itchy, wet, crusted, spreading beyond the scalp, or accompanied by hair loss may have another cause. The word organic on a product label does not prove that it is suitable for an infant.

Massage a small amount of plain, baby-suitable emollient into the scalp, leave it briefly to soften scale, then wash with a mild baby shampoo and use a soft brush only on loosened flakes. Keep product away from the eyes and wash it out rather than leaving oily residue on the scalp.

Repeat gently as advised; improvement may be gradual. Avoid scratching, picking, fragranced mixtures, essential oils, and adult dandruff treatments unless a clinician specifically recommends them. Arrange a medical review for bleeding, pus, increasing redness, tenderness, fever, a spreading rash, or a baby who seems unwell. Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, or a rapidly worsening reaction after applying a product. Do not use a product that causes swelling or blistering.
