What should you know about oral mucositis symptoms?

The mouth lining may become tender, shiny, swollen, or more easily irritated. Early symptoms can include a dry mouth, tingling, sensitivity, or a change in taste. As inflammation develops, brushing, chewing, swallowing, and speaking may hurt. The lips, tongue, gums, cheeks, and roof of the mouth can all be affected.

Mucositis commonly appears in connection with treatments that affect rapidly renewing cells, including chemotherapy or radiotherapy. The timing and severity vary by treatment plan. A sore mouth can also have other causes, so report it rather than assuming the cause.

Inspect your mouth gently each day and tell the team about new redness, swelling, sores, or bleeding. Clean with a soft toothbrush, use products recommended by your clinicians, and rinse as directed. Avoid smoking, alcohol-based rinses, sharp foods, strong spices, and acidic drinks if they worsen the irritation.

Small, moist portions may be easier than dry or crunchy foods. Keep fluids available and ask about pain relief before meals.
