Oral lichen planus treatment: home remedies and medical care

Short answer
Home measures can reduce irritation from oral lichen planus, but they do not replace an examination or prescribed treatment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What oral lichen planus means
Oral lichen planus is an inflammatory condition affecting the lining of the mouth. It may appear as fine white lines, sore red areas, or ulcers on the cheeks, gums, tongue, or palate. Burning can make spicy, acidic, salty, or hot foods difficult. The condition can come and go, and a mouth ulcer or patch can have other causes, so a clinician may need to inspect it and sometimes arrange further testing.
What you can do at home
Choose cool, soft foods while the mouth is sore and drink water regularly. Avoid tobacco, alcohol-containing mouthwash, and foods that sting. Use a soft toothbrush and gentle toothpaste; do not scrub or pick at patches. Keep dental appointments so sharp teeth, fillings, or gum irritation can be addressed. A clinician may prescribe a corticosteroid applied inside the mouth or, for more extensive inflammation, an oral corticosteroid. Do not start, stop, or share these medicines without advice.
When to seek care
Arrange a dental or medical review if a sore area persists, repeatedly returns, bleeds, forms a lump, or makes eating and drinking difficult. Seek urgent help for swelling that affects breathing or swallowing, inability to keep fluids down, or rapidly worsening pain. Regular follow-up helps distinguish a flare from an infection or another mouth condition.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the appearance fits oral lichen planus, whether a biopsy or dental assessment is needed, which irritants to avoid, and how long to use any mouth treatment. Ask how to recognise infection, what to do during a flare, and when your next review should be.

Avoid products that sting, especially alcohol-containing mouthwash, and mention toothpaste-related irritation to your clinician.
