Is oral lichen planus dangerous?

White lacy lines may cause little discomfort, while red erosions can burn, bleed, or interfere with eating. A clinician checks whether an area is healing, stable, or changing and may recommend a biopsy for a persistent focal lesion. Oral symptoms can occur without itchy skin or skin bumps elsewhere.

Avoid tobacco, limit alcohol exposure in mouth products, brush gently, and keep regular dental care. Follow the prescribed plan rather than repeatedly treating a sore yourself. Topical corticosteroids may calm local inflammation; oral corticosteroid treatment is reserved for selected situations and needs medical supervision.

Arrange prompt assessment for a sore that does not heal, a firm area, unexplained bleeding, increasing pain, or a patch that changes colour or texture. Get urgent help if swelling affects breathing, swallowing becomes difficult, or you cannot keep fluids down.
