How long oral lichen planus can last

Flares may be noticed as increased burning, tenderness, redness, or ulcers. Irritation from tobacco, alcohol-based products, rough foods, or dental problems can make the mouth feel worse. Oral lichen planus may exist without skin symptoms such as itchy skin or bumps, and improvement in one area does not prove that every area has healed.

Keep a simple record of sore locations, food triggers, and treatment use. Brush gently, attend dental reviews, and avoid products that cause stinging. Use prescribed topical corticosteroids exactly as directed. If symptoms cover larger areas or interfere with eating, a clinician may consider oral corticosteroid treatment and arrange monitoring.

Book a review if a sore or patch persists, changes in appearance, bleeds, or repeatedly returns. Seek prompt care for difficulty swallowing, inability to drink adequately, rapidly increasing pain, or mouth swelling. A new focal lesion should be examined even if earlier symptoms had improved.

Ask what improvement should look like, when follow-up is due, how long to continue each medicine, and whether a persistent area needs sampling or a dental assessment.
