What should you know about oral incision and drainage?

A clinician may recommend this minor procedure for an abscess in the gum, mouth, or nearby soft tissue. After numbing the area, they make a small opening and release the fluid; the site may be left open so it can continue to drain. Antibiotics may be considered when infection has spread or other clinical features make them appropriate.

Drainage can reduce pressure and throbbing, but it does not by itself explain why the abscess formed. A dental source, damaged tooth, or surrounding skin infection may need separate treatment.

Follow the instructions for rinsing, eating, brushing, and taking prescribed medicines. Do not squeeze the area or probe the opening. Keep follow-up appointments, because the cavity may need checking or further treatment even after pain improves.

Choose foods and drinks that are comfortable, avoid anything that irritates the site, and report an allergy or unexpected reaction to local anaesthetic or other medicine. Wash your hands before touching dressings if one was used.

Seek urgent help for spreading swelling, fever with worsening pain, difficulty opening the mouth, swallowing or breathing, confusion, or feeling faint. Contact the treating team if drainage stops while pressure returns or if redness and pain extend into nearby skin.

Ask where the abscess started, whether a tooth or wound needs treatment, how to clean the area, whether antibiotics are needed, and exactly when the site should be reviewed.
