What should you know about oral impetigo?

Impetigo is a superficial bacterial infection that can produce small blisters, sores, oozing, and golden or brown crusts on skin near the lips or nose. Scratching, eczema such as Atopic Dermatitis, insect bites, or minor breaks in the skin can make infection easier to spread. The mouth itself is not usually the main infected surface; the surrounding skin is examined.

Because impetigo can pass through direct contact or shared towels and cosmetics, touching and picking can move it to other areas. A clinician may diagnose it from its appearance and decide whether local or broader treatment is appropriate.

Wash hands after touching the area, keep nails short, and gently clean away loosened crusts with water as advised. Use separate towels, pillowcases, flannels, and cosmetics; wash them regularly and do not share them. Avoid picking, kissing over sores, or close skin contact while lesions are active. Arrange medical advice promptly if sores are spreading, painful, repeatedly returning, or not improving with prescribed care. Babies, people with reduced immunity, and people with extensive lesions need a lower threshold for review.
