What should you know about oral cellulitis treatment?

Cellulitis is a bacterial infection in deeper skin and soft tissue. Around the mouth, cheek, jaw, or lips, it may cause expanding redness, warmth, tenderness, swelling, or fever. Dental infection, a skin break, or another nearby infection can provide an entry point. A clinician may examine the mouth, teeth, face, and neck to judge how far the inflammation extends.

Treatment depends on the site and severity. Some people can take an antibiotic by mouth, while more extensive infection, difficulty swallowing, or rapid progression may require hospital assessment and medicine through a vein. Do not use leftover antibiotics or stop a prescribed course early without medical advice.

Arrange same-day medical or dental advice when facial swelling, painful skin, or fever is developing. Take prescribed medicine exactly as directed, drink fluids if swallowing is comfortable, and keep any affected skin clean. Avoid squeezing the area or applying irritating products.
