What should you know about oral antibiotics for toxic shock syndrome?

Toxic shock syndrome is a serious illness caused by toxins produced by certain bacteria. It can worsen quickly and affect blood pressure, organs, skin, and mental alertness. Hospital teams may give antibiotics through a vein, fluids, oxygen, and other supportive treatment while they look for and control the source of infection. Oral tablets may have a role later only when a clinician confirms that the person is stable and able to take medicines safely.

If toxic shock syndrome is suspected, call emergency services or go to an emergency department immediately. Do not wait for an oral prescription, use leftover antibiotics, or delay care while removing a tampon or menstrual cup; remove it if this can be done easily, but urgent medical attention remains necessary. Tell clinicians about recent surgery, wounds, childbirth, skin infection, or menstrual products, and bring a list of medicines and allergies.

Seek emergency help for sudden fever with vomiting or diarrhoea, dizziness or fainting, confusion, severe muscle aches, a widespread rash, breathing difficulty, cold or clammy skin, or rapidly worsening weakness. These symptoms can have other causes, but their combination warrants immediate assessment. Do not drive yourself if you feel faint, confused, or severely unwell.

Ask which infection source was found, how long treatment is expected to continue, whether oral medicine will replace intravenous treatment, and which warning signs should bring you back to hospital. Ask when follow-up blood tests or wound checks are needed.
