Oral antibiotics for Pseudomonas: what to know

Pseudomonas is a group of bacteria that can affect the ear, lungs, urinary tract, wounds and other sites. A swab or other sample may show whether it is present and which medicines inhibit it. A result must be interpreted alongside symptoms because bacteria can sometimes be present without causing the illness. The infection’s depth, blood-test findings, immune health, kidney function and ability to take medicines by mouth all influence the plan. Some infections need intravenous treatment, drainage or specialist care rather than tablets.

Arrange medical review if Pseudomonas has been found or is suspected, particularly after hospital care, a procedure, a chronic wound or repeated antibiotic exposure. Bring the test report and a list of medicines and allergies. Keep wounds clean and covered as instructed, and do not use leftover antibiotics. If tablets are prescribed, take them on schedule and check before adding antacids, supplements or new medicines, because some combinations reduce absorption or increase side effects.

Get urgent help for breathing difficulty, confusion, faintness, high fever, rapidly worsening pain or swelling, a spreading wound infection, or inability to keep medicines down. Eye pain or vision change also needs prompt assessment. People with weakened immunity or serious long-term illness should use a lower threshold for contacting their care team.

Ask which body site is infected, whether the sample confirms active infection, and whether the proposed oral medicine is expected to work against that strain. Clarify the treatment schedule, interactions, warning reactions and timing of follow-up testing.
