What should you know about oral antibiotics for PID?

Pelvic inflammatory disease can involve the uterus, fallopian tubes, ovaries, or nearby tissues. Treatment commonly uses antibiotics chosen to cover several possible bacteria, including infections such as chlamydia or gonorrhoea. Symptoms may include pelvic pain, unusual vaginal discharge, pain during sex, fever, or bleeding between periods. Improvement can take time even after treatment begins, so follow the prescription exactly and do not share leftover tablets.

Take each dose at the time advised and finish the course unless the prescriber changes it. Avoid sex until treatment is complete, symptoms have settled, and partners have been assessed or treated when advised. Keep any follow-up appointment, especially if symptoms do not begin to improve. Ask about alcohol, contraception, interactions, and what to do after vomiting a dose. A clinician may recommend testing for sexually transmitted infections and partner notification.

Seek urgent medical help for severe or worsening pelvic pain, fainting, heavy vaginal bleeding, persistent vomiting, high fever, confusion, or feeling seriously unwell. Contact the prescribing clinician promptly if a rash, facial swelling, breathing difficulty, or severe diarrhoea develops after an antibiotic. Pregnancy, recent childbirth, or concern about an abscess can change the treatment plan and may require hospital care.

Ask which infections the prescription covers, when you should expect symptom improvement, whether a partner needs treatment, and whether you need repeat testing. Ask what to do if a dose is missed or side effects appear.
