Oral antibiotics for acne in pregnancy

Acne in pregnancy can involve tender red bumps, pus-filled spots, or deeper painful lesions. An oral antibiotic is taken by mouth and may reduce acne-related inflammation or bacteria when a clinician believes it is appropriate. The choice depends on your pregnancy stage, allergies, other medicines, medical history, and whether the acne is leaving marks or scars.

Do not start, stop, or share an antibiotic based on an old prescription. Some acne medicines commonly used outside pregnancy are not suitable during pregnancy, while an antibiotic may still have limitations or side effects. Antibiotics also do not treat every type of acne, so the diagnosis matters.

Tell your dermatologist or maternity clinician that you are pregnant, trying to conceive, or breastfeeding, and provide the name of every medicine and supplement you use. Ask whether a topical plan, gentle cleanser, or another pregnancy-compatible option could control the acne. If an oral antibiotic is prescribed, follow the dose and schedule exactly, ask how to take it with food or other medicines, and complete the agreed course unless the prescriber changes it.

Use non-irritating skincare: wash gently, avoid picking, and stop products that sting or peel the skin. A clear treatment plan should include what improvement to expect, when it will be reviewed, and what to do if the acne worsens.

Contact the prescriber promptly for widespread rash, facial swelling, breathing difficulty, severe diarrhoea, or repeated vomiting after a dose. Seek urgent care for breathing trouble, faintness, or swelling of the lips or tongue. Arrange a review if painful acne is spreading, draining, scarring, or affecting sleep or mood, because the treatment may need reassessment.
