What should you know about operating otoscope?

The clinician can view the ear canal, eardrum, wax, swelling, discharge, redness, or a foreign object. The viewing tip helps direct light and magnification; a working channel may allow instruments to remove material or collect a sample. The device is used by trained professionals, particularly when a standard view is difficult or a small procedure is being considered.

Do not put cotton buds, oil, or other objects into the ear before an appointment. Tell the clinician about ear pain, drainage, previous ear surgery, hearing changes, or a known eardrum problem. During the examination, keep your head still and report sharp pain, dizziness, or discomfort immediately. A child may need a child health consultation so the examination can be paced around their comfort.

Arrange prompt medical assessment for severe ear pain, blood or pus from the ear, sudden hearing loss, an object that cannot be removed safely, or dizziness after an ear injury. Urgent help is appropriate if ear symptoms occur with facial weakness, confusion, or severe headache.
