Open sore under a stomach fold

Short answer
An open sore under a stomach fold should be kept gently clean and dry and assessed if it persists, spreads or becomes painful.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Main fold risks
- Moisture, heat and friction
- Gentle care
- Rinse, pat dry and reduce rubbing
- Prompt review
- Spreading redness, pus, fever or worsening pain
Why skin folds break down
The space beneath a stomach fold can trap sweat and heat. Skin may then soften and split from friction, or develop intertrigo with yeast or bacterial overgrowth. Contact dermatitis from soaps, wipes or powders can add redness and burning. A chronic ulcer has other possible causes, including pressure, poor circulation and inflammatory disease. A sore in a fold is not automatically an infection, and its appearance alone cannot establish the cause.
Care while arranging advice
Rinse gently, pat the fold dry and reduce rubbing with loose, breathable clothing. A clean non-stick dressing can shield the open area; change it when damp or soiled. Avoid scrubbing, picking, fragranced products and creams borrowed from someone else. Do not seal a moist fold under an airtight covering. Arrange a review if the skin is open, recurrent or not settling, because treatment may differ for friction, yeast, bacteria or an ulcer. A clinician can also check the area for Basal Cell Carcinoma or Squamous Cell Carcinoma when the sore is persistent or unusual.
When to seek care
Seek prompt care for spreading redness, increasing warmth, swelling, pus, bad odour, fever or worsening pain. Get urgent help if redness extends quickly, the skin turns dusky, or you feel faint or seriously unwell. Earlier review is sensible if you have diabetes, reduced sensation, circulation problems or a weakened immune system, because skin-fold wounds may worsen before they feel severe.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the sore looks like friction damage, dermatitis, yeast, bacterial infection or an ulcer; whether a swab or other test is needed; and how to dress and dry the fold. Mention recurrence, odour, discharge, medicines, diabetes and any change in size or colour.

Questions people ask
Can moisture cause an open sore under a stomach fold?
Yes. Persistent moisture can soften skin and friction can then split it, sometimes with yeast or bacterial overgrowth.
Can I use powder on the sore?
Avoid putting powder directly into an open wound unless a clinician recommends it; it can irritate tissue or cake in the fold.
