Onycholysis and vitamin D

Onycholysis describes the physical separation of a nail from its bed; it does not name the cause. A lifting nail may follow injury, repeated wet exposure, irritating cosmetics, fungal infection, or inflammatory nail disease. Vitamin D is involved in wider body functions, but taking a supplement does not automatically treat a separated nail. Nail psoriasis and nail fungus can produce overlapping changes, so colour and lifting should not be used to self-diagnose.

Ask a clinician whether a vitamin D blood test is appropriate for your wider health, particularly before taking high-dose supplements. Do not apply vitamin products to the nail unless advised. Meanwhile, trim only the loose edge, keep the nail dry, protect it from detergents, and stop picking, biting, artificial nails, and harsh polish removers. If infection is suspected, testing can help select treatment instead of delaying care with supplements.

Seek dermatology advice when separation persists, spreads, affects multiple nails, or appears without an obvious injury. Prompt review is needed for pain, pus, swelling, warmth, spreading redness, bleeding, or a dark streak. Do not wait for a supplement to work if the surrounding skin is inflamed or you have diabetes or reduced immunity.
